Funds and Owls

Two very exciting developments to report, one financial and the other educational:

1. As of yesterday, I have raised over $3,000! Having passed the halfway point after 3 weeks of fundraising, I am optimistic that I might surpass my $5,000 goal and provide SOTENI with some additional resources. Excellent.

2. As of a week ago, I have a new set of partners in this adventure - I just learned that I will be joined in Kenya by about one hundred 6-year-olds! The first graders of Whiting Lane Elementary School (my alma mater in West Hartford, CT) will be participating in my project via the Internet as part of their unit on Africa. Since I still vividly remember my own "Africa Unit" from Mrs. Pacht's first grade class (the highlight being our flight to Kenya in the school auditorium...) I am thrilled to be sharing this experience with my fellow Whiting Lane Owls.

The journey continues...

Harambee

Harambee means "together pushing forward" in Swahili, or as we like to say in the US, "many hands make light work".

This weekend I officially launched my fundraising efforts to raise nearly $5K to cover the costs of my project. I am drawing on my entire community to support my efforts, mailing approximately 265 letters to friends, family and acquaintances, emailing about 350 people, and hoping that all of those folks spread the word to a few more . My internship is taking on new meaning as more people in my life contribute their time, energy, and skills to help me make it happen.

If you, or someone you know would like to make a donation, please visit the website for Network for Good, and enter SOTENI in the field for charity name. Click "donate now" and just be sure to type in my name under designation.

The Beginning

Hello and welcome to my blog!

This is where I will be posting updates and reflections on my experience interning for the non-profit organization SOTENI International in rural Kenya. It is also a space for everyone who is supporting me in this project to be a part of what I am doing. My deposit is in, and my plane ticket is purchased, so the next 4 months will be spent raising approximatly $5,000 to cover the costs of the trip. More on that soon! Please check back often, and share your thoughts.
